Car burglaries on the rise in Rapid City

Posted:

Car burglaries are on the rise in Rapid City. Now, the police department needs your help to crack down on the crime.

There were 687 burglaries reported in 2011. This year, 778 have been reported; 106 since September.

Rapid City police officers say burglars aren't targeting a specific part of town, but they're going after unlocked cars. Lieutenant Mark Eisenbraun says while it's hard to catch car burglars, that crime is preventable.

"We're looking for the public to keep their eyes open and keep an eye on their own property as well as their neighbor's property," said Lt. Eisenbraun. "And if they see suspicious behavior and people that look like their out of place to give us a call."

To prevent car burglaries, always lock your doors, don't leave keys in the car and remove electronics and valuables out of plain sight.
