Eric Robert put to death at South Dakota Penitentiary

Eric Robert, who pleaded guilty in the April 2011 slaying of prison guard Ronald Johnson during a failed escape attempt, was put to death by lethal injection Monday night in Sioux Falls.

Robert, 50, was pronounced dead at 10:24 PM Central Time.

Robert had asked to be put to death, telling the court he would kill again.

Robert was serving an 80-year sentence for a kidnapping conviction when he and Rodney Berget, 50, tried to escape from a Sioux Falls prison. Authorities say the two hit Ronald Johnson with a pipe and covered his mouth with plastic wrap.  Johnson was killed on his 63rd birthday.

Robert and Berget were stopped before they could leave the prison.

Governor Daugaard issued a statement earlier, calling it a "sad day" for South Dakota.
