Continuing Coverage: Early voting in South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

As early voting enters its third week, numbers at the polls in Pennington county continue to gain momentum.

In Pennington county alone, 5500 people have already cast their ballots for this election.

And county auditors say that's on par with early voter turn out in 2008.

The auditors office has sent out roughly 4,000 ballots, largely to overseas military.

But only about a quarter of those have been returned.

Come election day, auditors say there will be 17,000 early votes to tally, and that accounts for a large percent of the voting population.

"In 2008 we voted about 75% of total turn out in Pennington and 37% was early voting. So we're thinking we're right on mark with that," said Julie Pearson, Pennington County Auditor.

State wide, more than 19,000 early voting ballots have been received.

The last day to register for the November general election is October 22nd.
