Current drought status passes that of previous seven year drought

Just how dry is it?

We now know that this drought is worse than the last drought that hit South Dakota.
The previous seven year drought peaked in early August of 2006.

At that time more than 60 percent of South Dakota was in an extreme drought, and more than a quarter of the state was categorized as in an exceptional drought.
The latest drought monitor report, released this past Thursday, shows that more than 52 percent of South Dakota is in extreme drought, and a staggering 32 percent is experiencing exceptional drought conditions.
That's a nearly 7-percent increase in the amount of land affected by exceptional drought from 2006.
