Main Street Square brings an estimated 200,000 people

One year ago this week, Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City officially opened.  Since that time, more than 150 private and public events have lured an estimated 200,000 people to the Square.

Staff at the Square says the response from both locals and tourists has exceeded their expectations. For example, just the profit from ice skating rentals put more than $100,000 in the Main Street Square's operating budget. That incoming revenue along with other sponsorship funds and vendor fees will allow the area to be self-sustaining within a few years. In its second year, Executive Director Megan Karbowski expects the happenings to increase, along with the amount of revenue coming in.
"With it being our first year our policy was start small and grow our events into successful 2nd annual, 3rd annual and maybe someday 20th annual events," Karbowski said.
The next large event at the Square is 'Scare in the Square' on October 27th . The ice rink is set to open in mid-November.
