Area children have a chance to benefit from free eye screenings.
This week is the 5th Annual Healthy Vision Week in South Dakota.
With assistance from 42 area eye care professionals the Northern Plains Eye Foundation works to provide free screenings to children 3 to 11 years old.
Rapid City Optometrist Dr. Eric Porisch says the number of kids they see goes up every year.
He says during this week at his office they can see anywhere from 20 to 25 kids in a day on top of their normal patients.
"Fun to see these kids come in, a lot of times it's
their first experience with the eye examination, and they're a little nervous
about what's going on, so I try to make it fun and friendly with them and have
them go away with a good experience so that they come back next time they won't
be so scared," says Porisch.
Porisch says the screenings are just basic to see if the children need any further treatment.
Eye care professionals all over the Black Hills and in Pierre are providing the services.
