Grass fire near airport a reminder that danger is still high

Posted:

It may be getting colder, but that doesn't mean the fire danger is gone.

Several area fire departments, led by the Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a grass fire Sunday morning near Rapid City Regional Airport.

The fire started late Sunday morning and burned about 80 acres before firefighters got it under control after 4 p.m.

Several houses were threatened because of the way the wind was blowing, but responders were able to keep the flames back.

Firefighters say the airport itself was never really threatened.
