Early voters go to the polls in high numbers in KOTA Territory

Two weeks into early voting, and it seems many South Dakotans have their minds made up.
In Pennington county alone, 4,500 voters have already registered to cast their ballots since early voting began in late September.

Statewide, 16,000 people have requested ballots. Less than half of those have been returned.

Pennington county Auditor Julie Pearson says more voters are shying away from political party affiliations this year, choosing to identify themselves as Independent.

And even though the presidential debate airs Wednesday, many already know which way they'll vote.
"People believe that voters aren't informed well enough to vote six weeks out, but these people that are voting have their minds made up and there's no changing them ," said Pearson.
While more people are registering as independents, South Dakota remains a republican state at 55%. 23% of registered voters are Democratic, and 22% are saying they're 'other'.
