Rapid City's WAVI marks Domestic Violence Awareness month

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

Since October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, Working Against Violence Inc. or WAVI kicked off the month with a press conference on Monday. The theme:Mourn, Celebrate, Connect.  It stands for mourning those who died from domestic violence, celebrating those who survived domestic violence, and connecting those who work to stop domestic violence.

During the press conference some speakers included Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom, States Attorney Glenn Brenner, and City Council Alder woman Charity Doyle.

WAVI Executive Director Mary Corbine says education and awareness are key factors to keep serving the community of Rapid City. "It's really important to bring the awareness out to the community, let them know that we're here, the services we have available and if they'd like to reach out they can," said Corbine.

"Here we are; there are solutions in terms of education programming and you know with community support we can make a difference and that's the message we want to get out today," said WAVI President Elect Mitchell Stone.

All this month WAVI will be holding activities throughout Rapid City to help educate and spread awareness about domestic violence, such as going to schools and talking about healthy relationships and holding a domestic violence survivor appreciation day.

WAVI has served the community for more than 30 years. In 2011, the organization served 2,187 clients, most of which were victims of domestic violence.
