Climatologist sees hope for drought relief next year

Posted:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ State Climatologist Dennis Todey says he thinks South Dakota will see some recovery from drought next year.

According to Todey, historically, even during the Dust Bowl years, there haven't been back-to-back years of drought this bad. He says his tentative optimism is amplified by the fact that this year's drought followed a handful of unusually wet years.

The U.S. Drought Monitor map shows about 75 percent of South Dakota in severe, extreme or exceptional drought. Todey says there's little hope of relief this fall.
