Option for a Rapid City intersection reconstruction laid out

An open forum meeting was held tonight to discuss the reconstruction of a busy Rapid City intersection.

Four options were laid out for the public to look at, consider, and make comments on at Thursday night's open forum. The first is just a rebuild of the current intersection at West Main and Jackson Boulevard, but the others make changes such taking out drive ways or adding another lane.

About 30,000 vehicles drive through the intersection every day, and project manager for the city of Rapid City Todd Peckosh says the reconstruction is needed. "The pavement is in very poor shape in areas throughout the intersection; our street department has a hard time with maintenance filling in all the joints that are failing," said Peckosh.

"We're early in the design phase that's when we like to do these things so we can make sure we get all the input implemented in the design," said HDR Project Manager Jody Page.

Construction on the intersection is scheduled for 2014 and a reconstruction option will probably be recommended to the city by the end of this year.
