The homecoming was very emotional when the buses carrying the 842nd rolled into Lyle Hare stadium in Spearfish.
Soldiers were greeted by family and friends with loud cheering and welcome home banners.
Following the tearful reunions, the guardsmen and their families were treated to a picnic lunch, followed by the official dismissal in the de–activation ceremony.
Many family members expressed the difficulties they faced with their soldier deployed overseas. The spouse of one soldier Mina Witt said "I was always worried about that one little thing, you know, and I didn't ever her want to deal with that. It turned out real good."
This is the second time the 842nd has been activated in the past 10 years.
The last deployment was in support of operation Iraqi Freedom.
