Street Crimes Unit to focus on north Rapid City

Posted:

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says the Street Crimes Unit made an impact in downtown Rapid City, and he's hoping for the same result in north Rapid City.

The Street Crimes Unit will double in size beginning October 1. Half of the nine officers in the unit will be completely dedicated to north-central Rapid City. Chief Allender says that area of town receives the most calls for service and deserves more of their attention.

It's a different approach to policing that essentially builds on the neighborhoods strengths to fight crime.  The Street Crimes Unit officers will work with the community to develop a plan to respond to crime. Chief Allender says quicker response times and an increase in police presence helped to solve problems downtown, and will likely make a difference in the residential neighborhood.

The Street Crimes Unit plans to work closely with Neighborworks and Habitat for Humanity to increase the number of owner occupied homes in Rapid City. The Chief says people who own their homes often take more pride in them.

The other officers in the Street Crimes Unit will continue their work downtown.  Newly promoted Sergeant Darren Soucy will supervise the Unit.
