Railroad construction coming to downtown Rapid City

Posted:

The third phase of a railroad upgrade project hits a busy stretch of Rapid City Wednesday.

Construction on the railroad tracks on East boulevard between Omaha and Main street will detour motorists until October 5th onto 3rd street.

City engineers say Canadian Pacific Railroad is re-leveling the tracks, and the city is creating smoother cement approaches to the tracks as well.

Area business owners say their revenue drops by as much as 50% when construction blocks off traffic.

"If they see its blocked off, they may not even attempt to come into the store here. Especially all the tourists that do come by and find our store here, they may just blow us off," said Doug Dougherty, assistant manager at The Western Outlet on East boulevard.

The railroad upgrades will continue through downtown, as far as 11st street, in the coming weeks. The project is using roughly $100,000 of city tax dollars.
