After the sudden death of its President last week, the School of Mines is undertaking the difficult task of appointing a new leader.

The school's 18th president, Dr. Robert Wharton passed away last Wednesday.
He died at the age of 60 from neck cancer.

Dr. Duane Hrncir, Provost and Vice President of academic affairs, has been appointed as interim president by the Board of Regents.

Hrncir brings more than 25 years of experience in research and administration, and previously served as chemistry department chair and faculty member at the university of Texas at Dallas.

"Bob Wharton would smile at the appointment, he brought Duane here.  he's one of his best appointments. We expect him to be a good leader and manage this campus during this difficult time," said Dr. Jack Warner, Executive Director of the South Dakota Board of Regents.

The Board of Regents will begin discussing a permanent replacement at its next board meeting October 9th.
