SD authorities end search for suspected burglar

Posted:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ Authorities have ended a search after spending several hours searching a cornfield north of Sioux Falls for a suspected burglar thought to be armed with a shotgun.

Property owners on Saturday morning reported suspicious activity. When Minnehaha County Sheriff's Department officers arrived, they saw a man take off with what appeared to be a shotgun and run into a cornfield.

Highway Patrol troopers, a state airplane, two armored vehicles and SWAT teams were called to the scene.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says the search was called off Saturday afternoon because it was too risky to send officers into the cornfield where it would be difficult to spot a suspect with a shotgun. He says authorities will continue patrolling the area.
