Rapid City students taught DUI lesson with goggles

Posted:

A local organization wants to make sure it's message to teens is hammered home, that drinking and driving just doesn't mix.

Black Hills Urgent Care representatives are educating central high school students on the effects of alcohol.  Students tested out Fatal Vision goggles Friday, which simulate the effect of drinking by throwing off the eyes to focus separately. There are four goggles, which are designed  to simulate different levels of impairment (Blood Alcohol Content of <.06 to >.25 ) all the way up to four drinks.

While students laughed as others knocked down cones and struggled to walk in a straight line, health experts say driving under the influence is no laughing matter.

"We didn't really want this to be a fun experiment," said Sean Coyne, Marketing Director for Black Hills Surgical Hospital. "We wanted it to be an eye opening experience for kids because a lot of them put the goggles on and the first thing they say is oh my goodness. They couldn't
believe what an effect that had on their vision and your ability to walk."

While the message is important year round Coyne say it's especially important this week as students celebrate homecoming.
