Newly discovered county land to be auctioned

Posted:

Nothing is better than finding something valuable - that you never even knew you had.

That's exactly the feeling Pennington county Commissioners had a year ago when they discovered a 40 acre plot of land near Deerfield that had been off the tax rolls since 1917.

The land is now going up for auction.

Realtors say the parcel is ideal for recreation with its grassy valleys and remote location.

Although no official assessment of the land has been released, realtors say local and regional buyers from as far as Montana are already very interested. Commissioners say a public auction will likely be held.

"As far as the value, the sky's the limit with public auction. It depends on who it appeals to the greatest and where they come in with their dollars," said Todd McPherson of McPherson realty and auction.

Similar plots of land in the black hills have sold for between $2,000-$5,000 an acre.

The auction is expected to take place before November
