Standing Rock tribe members discuss settlement

Posted:

A Native American tribe based in North Dakota will receive a hefty pay day, but some tribal members may not see a dime.

Originally, a settlement between the United States government and the Standing Rock tribe all tribal members would have received $1000, but after a tribal council meeting, members who live off the reservation would be cut out of the settlement.

For those members, a vote to include everybody is what's most important.

"We should put it back on the referendum where the tribal council can have a meeting and all the people can vote on it reservation wide," said Sydney Whitesell, a member of the Standing Rock tribe.

A number of standing rock members will travel to Fort Yates, North Dakota on Friday to attend a council meeting.
