Veterans memorial breaks ground in KOTA Territory

Posted:

Plans for a veteran's memorial in one KOTA Territory town have gained momentum.

After nearly a year of planning the Custer VFW held a ribbon cutting and ground breaking ceremony Wednesday, on a piece of land that will one day hold a veteran's memorial.

The next step is to design and build the memorial. VFW members want the design ideas to come from the community because that is where the money to build the memorial will come from.

Memorial President Tony Gonsor says costs could be in the ballpark of $30,000. He says it will just depend how much money the community pulls together for the project. "This is a veteran's town, we have the two veteran's hospitals close by, there's a national veterans cemetery in Hot Springs and one in Sturgis," said Gonsor. "A lot of retired veterans live here. This is for the community and for the veterans in the community."

Gonspr says the memorial will probably take four to five years to complete, but he hopes to have the design decided on in the next couple of months.

If you have any design ideas or would like to make a donation for the memorial contact the Custer VFW.
