The President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has lost his battle with cancer.

A message posted on the school's web site says they learned Doctor Robert Wharton passed away Wednesday morning.

Wharton was diagnosed with neck cancer late last year, but was in remission as of April.

He had received seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments at the John Vucurevich Cancer Care Institute.

Doctor Wharton attended Harvard and Stanford School of Business, in addition to working briefly at NASA as a senior scientist.

Doctor Wharton also spearheaded many economic development initiatives within the Rapid City community. He was the university's 18th president.

The School of Mines has yet to release a statement and funeral arrangements are unknown at this time.
