Rapid City program promotes workplace wellness

Posted:

According to state health statistics, 65% of South Dakotans are overweight or obese.

But the Rapid City YMCA and other health agencies aim to change those statistics, starting in the workplace.

With the help of a state grant, the Pioneering Healthy Communities Committee is launching a program to encourage fitness in the workplace.

The 'Stairway to health' initiative is in development for Rapid City area businesses, and its main push is simple. Something as easy as taking the stairs, could improve your health.

It's one small way the group hopes to encourage workplace wellness.

"We can encourage businesses to allow walking meetings or allow a 10 minute break to get up and walk around their block," said Mary Wickler Peterson, YMCA Community Director.

"Healthier employees work better. They enjoy their time at the office. In the end, you end up decreasing the amount of sick time," said Spencer Miller, Branch manager at Morgan Stanley.

At least 13 area businesses are interested in participating in the workplace program.
