Teen Court holds mock trial to show how they make a difference

Posted:

A local Juvenile Diversion Program shows their families what teen courts all about.

The audience not only got to see their teens question the defendants, but were the jury in the mock trial.

It's called "Aggravated Adults" because the teenage defendants are portrayed by local community leaders who get sentenced to community service.

Cody Raterman, a Juvenile Diversion Coordinator with the 7th Circuit Court, says Teen Court typically sees first time offenders and sentences them to community service.

"It's an informal program where defendants have to answer to their piers instead of answering to myself or a judge somewhere. This is great because it makes them more accountable and responsible," says Raterman.

Teen Court was created by the States Attorney Office and the 7th Circuit Court.

The program sees more than 200 confidential cases per year.
