When it comes to activities it the Black Hills National Forest like hiking, fishing, horseback riding, even picnicking. Many of us take our mobility for granted.
That's why officials with the Black Hills National Forest offer a special day each year for special guests.
"We've got face painting, we've got gold panning," says Ty Gerbracht, Operations Manager with Forest Recreation Management.
They also have reptile and bird exhibits, and a horse drawn buggy ride.
"I rode on a buggy awhile ago and I enjoyed that," says special guest Bob Mason.
And of course, fishing.
All part of the activities at the 8th Annual Experience the Outdoors Day for 240 special guests.
"I don't know if it's something that they don't do, I just
know it's something that we want to make sure they get exposed to," says Gerbracht.
"The activities that we take for granted aren't available to
them all the time," says Recreation Program Manager with Black Hills National Forest, Rick Hudson.
The purpose of the event: To highlight outdoor opportunities
that are available throughout the Black Hills National Forest.
Horsetheif Campground makes the experience that much more
enjoyable because of its handicapped accessibility, including sidewalks, boardwalks, ramps, and trails.
"That's all available here in a nice safe setting with
facilities designed for those that may have a little bit of trouble with
mobility," says Hudson.
Allowing them to have to most fun possible.
"I like to fish a lot.
That's my favorite sport," says special guest Bob Mason.
And their guests aren't the only ones leaving with smiles.
"It's very rewarding to provide these types of activities ,
and enjoy what all they have to offer. They have a zest for life and very
enthusiastic about being out here," says Hudson.
"We come out every single year, they really, really look
forward to it," says Black Hills Works Instructor, Lea Haisch.
