Suicides on the decline in Pennington County

Posted:

Thirty-six percent fewer people died by suicide in 2011.  That's a significant number that some say point to successful prevention efforts.

One of the goals of the Suicide Prevention Task Force was to increase the number of prevention trainings in the community.  They accomplished that goal, training nearly 900 people.

Front Porch Coalition Director Stephanie Schweitzer Dixon says the Crisis Care center also plays an integral part, identifying mental illness before it is too late.

"We've done a lot of awareness, we've got the hotline number out to people so that people in crisis know to go for help," Schweitzer Dixon said.
