Posted:

An elderly Rapid City man is recovering in the hospital after hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle.

Police Spokesperson Tarah Heupel says 72-year-old Charles Doherty's medical condition caused him to drive off the road and hit 46-year–old Joel Nikolas of Rapid City.

The accident took place at the West Omaha and Canal Street intersection at 10:42 Wednesday morning.

Police say Doherty drove off the road and struck Nikolas before running into a fence, causing $6,800 in damage.

Both men were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The driver suffered serious injuries while the pedestrian was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

No citations were issued.
