Pianos decorated by disabled artists grace Main Street Square

Posted:

The streets of Rapid City were alive with the sound of music over the weekend; or, at least, Main Street Square was, with the help of a pair of pianos.

The instruments are courtesy of the Suzie Cappa Center for Art Expression and Enjoyment.

The center collaborated with Main Street Square last year to provide a home for the keys, and set them on the corner last week to promote a dueling pianos concert on Saturday.

The pianos were decorated by artists with disabilities at Black Hills Works (formerly the Black Hills Workshop) as a way to support a city that's been so supportive of them.

"Especially in the art center, people are always bringing in donations," said Brad A. Winter with the Suzie Cappa Center. "So we like to have opportunities that the artists can give back to our community in Rapid City. ... This is a good project for them to be able to show off some of their artistic talent."

Main Street Square put the pianos back in storage at the end of the weekend, to be brought out for special occasions like the Art and Wine Festival next June.
