Pheasants Forever chapter predicts good hunting season despite drought

Posted:

It seems everywhere you turn this summer, the negative impacts of the drought crop up. But one group isn't too worried about the effects this year.

At Saturday's Pheasants Forever banquet, hunters of all ages geared up for the fall hunting season.

And while the drought might affect next year's prospects because of limited growth in the birds' habitat, some predict low snow last winter and rain earlier in the year will make this fall great for hunters.

"I've heard that the state overall is up about 18 percent over last year's numbers," said Pheasants Forever chapter vice president Terry Hulm. "And last year was no slouch. It was a good year for pheasants and for hunters both."

But even if the numbers are down -- as they just might be in some areas -- there are other reasons to head out into the wilderness.

"I think people go out and hunt to have a good time," said chapter president Karl Castor. "They're not out there probably to put all the meat on the table that we can get."

South Dakota's pheasant hunting season starts on October 20 and runs through January 6.
