Rapid City water main expansion begins

Posted:

Rapid City Regional Airport broke ground Friday to celebrate the first phase of the water main expansion. Although work on the water main project has already begun, airport leaders celebrated the first of four phases.

The water main expansion project will include 5 miles of pipe that will carry more water to the airport for fire protection.

Mayor Sam Kooiker says the expansion will benefit the airport in more than one way. "The waterline here at the airport will allow for additional expansion down the road at the airport," said Kooiker. "Right now there is a limited capacity to do any additional expansion because of the lack of fire flows."

All four phases of the project are estimated to wrap up by the end of summer 2013.
