Rapid City Kiwanis Club donates dictionaries to third-graders

The dictionary defines generosity as "readiness or liberality in giving."

Rapid City third-graders learned that first-hand Friday through, of all things, dictionaries.

The Downtown Rapid City Kiwanis Club spent the day giving dictionaries to third grade students, free of charge.

At Grandview Elementary, where we caught up with them, members passed out 88 of the books, just a small fraction of the district.

The children-oriented service group participates in the dictionary program every year, giving the gift of words to kids as teachers start to teach them how to use the reference materials.

And the kids like the fact that they can write their names inside the cover.

"So it's their individual dictionary," said Kiwanis member Gus Jacob. "Although they all look the same, it's their individual dictionary, and they're always glad to get a new book."

The national Dictionary Project reports more than 17 million kids have gotten free dictionaries since its implementation in 1995.
