Pine beetle fight gains momentum in Meade county

Posted:

The fight to stop the spread of the pine beetle gains an ally in Meade county.

Meade county commissioners have been in talks with the US Forest service for the past 30 years to be able to cut down infected trees on forest service property.

The sheer quantity of forest service lands has made it virtually impossible for the forest service to address all beetle trees, but now they'll have some help.  They've agreed to let Meade county help thin the dead beetle trees, to prevent further spread of the infestation.

Meade county has dedicated over $90,000 to remove and stack dead beetle trees.

"Meade county is one the least hardest hit, that's why its so important to stop this infestation right here," said Alan Aker, Meade county Commissioner.

Aker, who is a lumber contractor, says he has donated time to aid in the effort. Aker says most infected trees are located in small pockets of 5 to 10.
