Businesses struggle amid construction in downtown Sturgis

Posted:

Business owners on Lazelle street say they're seeing their businesses fail because of road construction in the area.

Since construction began in the last week of August, the 900 block of Lazelle street has been largely closed off as a road resurfacing and water main project gears up.

At least two business owners say their profits have dropped by 40% so far and they say, the construction is also hurting the agricultural community in the area.

"They could have waited two weeks as was planned. Cool Deadwood nights and the mustang rally were two events I could've capitalized on- but didn't," said Jay Fields, co-owner of Rosco's Steakhouse.

"A lot of these ranchers don't know its closed and they send their truckers down 34 to go to St. Onge for the sale, and then they get a ticket," said Nancy Fields.

Christina Steele with the city of Sturgis says all businesses do have access, most through alleyways. She says there's simply no way around road closures during a construction project of this size.
