United Way kick-off begins with mass mailing

Posted:

It's a day when people fan out across Rapid City to help others in need, a day when thousands show their support for the United Way of the Black Hills.

The "Day of Caring" begins with lunch at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center - then a mob of people wearing green shirts will fan out into the community to help with civic projects. The projects include everything from house cleaning for someone who is disabled and minor repairs to small building projects.

This event is how the United Way has kicked off its fundraising campaign for many years. And, there's something new this year: a mass mailing.

Every household in Rapid City, Sturgis, and the Northern, and Southern Black Hills will get a flier Thursday asking for a donation. Executive Director, Renee Parker said it comes after many people say they never donate to United Way because they are never asked too.

"This year we're doing something brand new to reach more donors, we're sending a direct mail piece to every household. 84,000 households will receive this piece from the United Way explaining that their one donation to united way can make a huge impact in our local community," Parker said.

Last year, the United Way raised nearly $2 million. 100% of that money stays in the communities where it is donated.
