Fire updates: Wednesday afternoon

Kinney fire

7 mile northeast of Newcastle, WY

Containment: 5%

Custer, SD – Firefighters worked hard Tuesday and overnight on the Kinney fire which grew to 1380 acres overnight.  A decrease in temperatures and an increase in relative humidity is helping reduce fire behavior and intensity this morning. The fire is located in Pennington County.

Firefighters will continue to improve and increase containment on the east and north sides of the fire and assess opportunities for containment on the south side of the fire.

There are currently 120 personnel assigned to the fire, including 4 heavy airtankers, 3 single engine air tankers, one type 1 helicopter, 1 type 3 helicopter, 1 Type 3 Fire Management Team, 6 crews, 25 engines and 2 dozers.


Upton fire

Containment: Expected to be 100% by Wednesday night if weather permits

One house burned and 2 dozens others were evacuated near Upton.
The fire has burned about 235 acres.
Highway 16 reopened Tuesday evening.
The cause is unknown, but it may have been sparked by a passing train Tuesday afternoon.



Nebraska panhandle/ South Dakota fires
The fires burning in the panhandle (The Douthit fire & West Ash fire)
 and across the South Dakota border (Wellnitz fire) did not grow overnight.

The fires burned 86,201 total acres and is 95% contained.

At last report, the Wellnitz fire was over 75% contained.


Gilead Fire

10 miles northwest of Buffalo, WY

4,200 acres have burned. No estimate of containment was provided.

The fire started August 14, when lightning struck the Bighorn National Forest. No structures have been lost.
