Rapid CIty Council expects delayed CPI increase override vote to fail

Posted:

The Rapid City Council on Tuesday postponed a vote on a controversial veto to the very end of the meeting.

But even without a decision as of late Tuesday night, members say they don't expect anything to change.

As the Council meeting pushed close to the four-hour mark, it was still unclear when a vote on Mayor Sam Kooiker's property tax veto would come.

Council vice president Charity Doyle said she expected the meeting to run into the early hours, maybe as late as 2 a.m.

But she added she thought the override vote would fail without much, if any, discussion.

She told us those in favor of the tax increase aren't interested in "grandstanding," and she didn't think they'd change anyone's mind.

The 3 percent property tax increase would have provided the city with around $400,000 in revenue.
