Wildfire update

Posted:

The Wellnitz Fire, burning in Nebraska and on the Pine Ridge Reservation here in South Dakota, is only 27% contained.

But fire fighters say now with calmer winds and cooler temperatures significant progress is expected to be made tonight.

Lines held overnight and firefighters say things are settling down.

The fire has burned more than 77,000 acres, 48,000 thousand in Nebraska, and 28,000 in south Dakota.

The decrease in acreage is due to more accurate mapping.

The Douthit and the West Ash fires, burning together south of Chadron, Nebraska, are now 75% contained.

All evacuation orders previously in place were lifted at 6:30p.m. last night.

At this time all utilities have been restored.

The West Ash burned more than 50,000 acres.

And the Douthit fire burned close to 30,000 acres. Both fires were started by lightning.
