Governments, companies reach mine settlement

Posted:

The federal government and the state of South Dakota have reached a $30 million settlement with four mining companies to address environmental contamination at the Gilt Edge mine near Lead.

Clean-up of the former gold and silver mine has cost the EPA more than $100 million. Government lawyers filed a lawsuit last month seeking to recover costs from Homestake Mining Co., Cyprus Mines Corp., Cyprus Amax Minerals Co. and Blue Tee Corp.

Consent decrees filed with the complaint outlined costs to be paid: $4.2 million for Homestake and $26 million between Cyprus and Blue Tee. None of the companies admitted liability.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley calls the settlement a step in the companies being held responsible for their actions.
