The risk of getting heat-related illnesses rises with mercury. Rapid City Regional Hospital reports 19 heat-related illnesses since June 1st.  RCRH Emergency Room Docs says they haven't seen large numbers of heat stroke, and attribute that to people heeding the warnings.

Heat stroke is common. Here's what to watch out for: high body temperature, nausea, vomiting, lack of sweating, fast heart beat.

Our furry friends can also suffer from the hot temps.  While dogs have sweat glands, they are much smaller than a humans, making it easier for them to over-heat. If your pet appears sluggish, disoriented and is panting, you should call your vet immediately.

The Black Hills Humane Society says at least two dogs have come into the shelter in the last week after being rescued by police from hot cars.
