Chapel Valley earns Firewise Community distinction

Posted:

Chapel Valley homeowners realized the potential fire risk in their neighborhood and did something about it.

Trees, shrubs and debris surround the subdivision, making it a perfect place for a wildland fire catastrophe.  But people who own homes in the area took a proactive approach, significantly reducing the fire threat and earning the neighborhood recognition from the National Firewise Communities Program.

Achieving the Firewise distinction is not easy. The homeowners worked to thin trees, lay wood chips and replaced wood shingle roofs. New fire hydrants were also installed to meet city water pressure needs.

"We don't want another Colorado Springs here in Rapid City," Chapel Valley Association President George Larson said.

Each homeowner in the subdivision paid a small fee to apply, and ultimately receive the title of a Firewise Community.
