Rapid City Mayor Kooiker responds to 'political game' accusations

Posted:

Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker's veto of the property tax increase last week stirred up allegations of political maneuvering.

Now Kooiker responds to the charge.

He said the resolution he introduced at the beginning of the year was just a formal continuation of former Mayor Alan Hanks' push for Council input in property tax decisions.

He also said his decision to veto the Council's decision was not part of any political game, and that he thinks his accuser, Council vice president Charity Doyle, simply doesn't like the concept of a veto.

"Even though [vetoes are] rare," he said, "she certainly has a right to have an issue with it. But it is part of the statutory responsibility, unless you want a mayor who's a rubber stamp."

Kooiker added with the revenue the city's bringing in without the tax increase, it would be "unconscionable" to raise taxes.
