Mural greets air travelers arriving in Rapid City

A mural was installed in the baggage claim area of the Rapid City Regional Airport Monday. It is titled "Dawn to Dusk: a Prairie Panorama."

The 18 panel acrylic painting spans about 100 feet and displays two local scenes - one view isRapid Valley just after sunset and one view is from Bear Butte at sunrise.  As a whole, the painting depicts a full day in the Black Hills.

The artist, James Van Nuys, Rapid City, has been painting professionally for the past 30 years. He says the airport mural turned out better than he expected especially because he didn't get to see the room it would be placed in before he started painting. "My colors came out very well I managed to pick up a lot of colors in the carpet and the walls and the piece fits in and just brightens up the room very nicely," said Van Nuys.

The airport has scheduled a grand re-opening for September 28th to highlight the new public art and the rest of the $20.5 million in renovations.
