Industrial manufacturing brings millions to Rapid City

Posted:

Rapid City's industrial manufacturing sector is projected to bring millions into the local economy, thanks to construction along interstate 90.

A long-vacant stretch of land on Dyess road near exit 61 off 1-90 is seeing millions of dollars of development in the manufacturing sector.

A 60-thousand square foot lumber distribution plant is already under construction and slated to open in October, while another plastics and pipe making company is considering purchasing the land next door.

Texas based company, WL plastics, hope to start construction on their new $13-million dollar facility in the next few weeks.

Developers say the North Dakota oil boom is fueling much of the industrial building in the area.

"Businesses that deal with those businesses are more apt to come here too because of transportation being right now next door and they're compatible businesses, whether they sell
the same products or supply products for those companies...business begets success," said Doyle Estes, Developer and Lawyer.

Representatives with WL Plastics say the new plant would generate $50 to 60 million dollars annually, and offer about 40 new skilled and semi skilled labor jobs to the community.

Once construction begins, the plant is slated to be completed by march of 2013.
