Rapid City Mayor vetoes property tax hike

Posted:

Rapid City Mayor Sam Kookier vetoed the city council's vote to up property taxes next year.

Monday night the city council voted 6 to 4 to accept the consumer price index or CPI tax increase.
It's a routine practice done to offset the rising cost of doing business. The Mayor says it's unnecessary, siting the termination of eight TIFs and an unexpected jump in sales tax revenue.

The Mayor said, "Rapid City's economic growth is the catalyst for much deserved property tax relief."

The CPI would add an additional $402,000 to the 20-3 city budget, and cost the average tax payer about a $1.00 per month.
