20 cent hike: trend or fluke?

Posted:

It's the peak summer driving season – when high demand normally pushes up gas prices but by 20 cents a pop?

Thursday morning unleaded gas could be found as high as $3.89 a gallon on Rapid City's west side.

You'll find a 24 cent difference across town on East North Street. Whether the other stations are simply lagging behind is the big question.

But local and national analysts say the spike will likely continue through Labor Day weekend.

Although he says he's mindful of the price of gas, Black Hills visitor Jim Lindsay of Clearfield, Utah says it isn't deterring their travel plans.

"You just pay more as you go along, but I've got to admit that I'm a little bit more thoughtful where I'm going, that's for sure."

So what can you do to soften the blow of higher gas prices? Experts say drive slower, drive less, or wait.
