Rapid City National Guard Unit returns from Afghanistan

Family, friends and South Dakota's governor welcomed home members of a Rapid City Army National Guard unit. Seven soldiers from the 48th Detachment were greeted Wednesday with cheers at Rapid City Regional Airport.

The service members returned from Afghanistan, where they spent the last year supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The troops helped fix airplanes, as well as provide aerial surveillance to ground forces.

Governor Dennis Daugaard, who visited the Rapid City unit in Afghanistan four months ago, says he's grateful everyone made it home safely.

"It's important to have a celebration so that they know we know they're back and let them know we value their service and are grateful to have their safe return,' said Governor Daugaard.

"It's amazing to come home especially after coming out of an area like that," said Sergeant First Class Randall McCann.

The first service member returned from Afghanistan in December. The remaining six returned in groups of two over a two month period.

This was the second mobilization for Detachment 48. The Rapid City based unit was deployed to Afghanistan for seven months in 2008.
