Renovations begin on historic Rapid City mansion

Posted:

Restorations efforts are officially underway on a Rapid City home with more than 120 years of history behind it.

Windows and crumbling exterior walls will be the first items to be fixed on the historic 1880's McGillycuddy house on South street in Rapid City.

The Historic Rapid City committee hopes to raise the back roof at least eight feet, and eventually add a second story to the home, to bring it back to its former glory.

The home was built by former Rapid City Mayor Valentine McGillycuddy, and volunteers say community support for the restoration has been encouraging.

"The majority of the cost so far has been donated labor. We probably have invested $15,000 so far, plus the cost of the house," said Fred Thurston, board member and volunteer architect.

The restorations are being funded by private donations.

The total cost of the construction will come close to half a million dollars over four phases.
