Jackley unhappy with plan for surplus river water

Posted:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is taking issue with a Corps of Engineers plan to charge water users for surplus Missouri River water in the state.

Jackley says the water belongs to South Dakota, and that he might take the corps to court to protect the state's interests.

The corps has released draft surplus water reports for Missouri River reservoirs in Montana, the Dakotas and Nebraska. The agency is taking public comments until Sept. 7 and plans public meetings in all the states. A meeting is set on Aug. 27 in the South Dakota capital of Pierre and Aug. 28 in the North Dakota capital of Bismarck.
