$500,000 bond set for man accused in toddler death

Bond is set for half a million dollars for a Colorado man arrested in connection with the death of a toddler in Rapid City.
 
Edward Berges, 23,  is charged with second degree murder or first degree manslaughter in the alternative as well as aggravated battery on an infant and aggravated child abuse.

Second degree murder and first degree manslaughter both carry mandatory life sentences.

Police were called to the 3000 block of west omaha street around nine Wednesday night.
They found an unresponsive 2-year-old girl, who had been left in the care of berges, her mother's boyfriend.

The child died at Sanford hospital Thursday.

Deputy State's attorney Scott Roetzel says bruising on the victims body indicates Berges may have a prior history of abuse with the child victim.

Rapid City, S.D. –Just after 9 p.m. on August 15, Rapid City Police responded to a medical call on the 3000 block of West Omaha Street. They found an unresponsive 2-year-old girl, who police say had been left in the care of her mother's boyfriend.

The girl was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital, and later flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls for more extensive medical treatment.

She died at Sanford Hospital Thursday afternoon.

Based on the seriousness of her injuries, detectives from the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation Wednesday night.

The boyfriend, Edward Berges, age 23 of Rapid City, was arrested this afternoon on charges including:

  • Aggravated child abuse, a Class 3 felony, punishable by 15 years in the state penitentiary and a $30,000 fine.
  • Second degree murder, a Class B felony, punishable by life imprisonment in the state penitentiary and a $50,000 fine.
