Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers

Posted:

The Meals on Wheels program in Rapid City helps make sure seniors that need a little extra help in get a good meal, but they are currently short on volunteers.

About 70 people are helping deliver meals to the elderly in the program, but Community Resource Coordinator Marcia Mayer says they need at least ten more volunteers.

Volunteers usually deliver ten to fifteen meals at least once a week, and that usually takes about an hour.

Mayer says that there is instant gratification for volunteers. "We have several seniors that this is the only meal that they receive on a daily basis and we are the only contact that they have so with that in mind you get to see their smiling faces and you know get to know them, and you eventually become family with these participants," said Mayer.

Mayer says it costs more than seven dollars for a meal, and donations are also extremely important to keep the program going.
