YFS run promotes exercise, eating right

With childhood obesity a main concern in our society, one KOTA Territory organization looks to do something about it.

The Ridiculous Red Run has become a yearly tradition hosted by Youth and Family Service's Girls Incorporated program.

Girls are encouraged to dress up in the craziest red clothes, and act goofy as they complete the 3K run.

This is just one of the steps YFS has taken to push healthier lifestyles to a young age group.

The program promotes nutrition by increasing the number of lean meats, vegetable and grains in their menu. And the curriculum requires an hour of active movement per day.

"We like to get out and take them for walks. We have activities in the gym for hula hoops, basketball. We do a lot of swimming activities in the summer. And at the end of the year we do this program," said Michelle Brevik, a health advocate for Girls Inc.

250 girls participated in the run. Experts say the exercise will burn about 180 calories.
